Setup a Pi-Hole and don't depend on browser-level but network-level ad blocking.
- ycombonator 7y ago+1 ! Loving the pihole setup myself. Optimized the dnsmasq & raspbian network a little bit. I have 248,000 hosts on block list. Can you share your block lists if you can ?
- pbhjpbhj 7y agoWhat optimisations, please? Not OP, but FWIW I'm just using standard lists (you asked, I'm not sure what use it is): https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/hosts https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/h... https://mirror1.malwaredomains.com/files/justdomains https://mirror1.malwaredomains.com/files/justdomains http://sysctl.org/cameleon/hosts http://sysctl.org/cameleon/hosts https://zeustracker.abuse.ch/blocklist.php?download=domainblocklist https://zeustracker.abuse.ch/blocklist.php?download=domainbl... https://s3.amazonaws.com/lists.disconnect.me/simple_tracking.txt https://s3.amazonaws.com/lists.disconnect.me/simple_tracking... https://s3.amazonaws.com/lists.disconnect.me/simple_ad.txt https://s3.amazonaws.com/lists.disconnect.me/simple_ad.txt https://hosts-file.net/ad_servers.txt https://hosts-file.net/ad_servers.txt
- ycombonator 7y agoSorry just catching up. Just the regular Linux network sysctl optimizations. Not all of them may apply to Raspbian or the hardware you are running it on.
- vbezhenar 7y agoWhat's the advantage of Pi-Hole over ubound?
- FabHK 7y agoCouldn't one just use a hosts file, eg with Gas Mask? https://github.com/2ndalpha/gasmask https://github.com/2ndalpha/gasmask (And btw, uBlock origin can do more than block certain IPs)
- FroshKiller 7y agoHosts files need to be set up per device, and some devices don't implement hosts files.
- ddebernardy 7y agoThat's all great, but not particularly useful when you need to use your laptop on a network you don't control.
- FroshKiller 7y agoI use a Pi-hole on my home network, and on other networks, I use a VPN home and manually specify the Pi-hole as my DNS server.
- zamadatix 7y agoNote DNS ad blocking is a very limited subset of what browser-level blockers support. Better than nothing but certainly not a replacement.
- JMTQp8lwXL 7y agoWith the changes coming to Chrome, is there a most realistic option than network-level blocking?
- cowgoesmoo 7y agoFirefox?
