Apple Still Eyes Intel's Modem Business
- PaulHoule 7y agoEven if Intel can't make decent modems they probably own patents that can make it harder for others to make modems.
- shmerl 7y agoWhich is a good reason not to sell them to Apple. Apple and patents is a bad combination.
- duxup 7y agoIs there a tech company who is good with them?
- Galaxeblaffer 7y agoProbably not a comparable example but Tesla ?
- PaulHoule 7y agoAt least Apple makes products and is not a troll.
- Galaxeblaffer 7y agoBurn.. I'm not even a musk fan, but still, I like his attitude.
- TomMarius 7y agoConsidering that I sit in a Tesla right now, I am fairly certain Tesla also makes products.

- ksherlock 7y agoo/t but ... duxup loves you?
- duxup 7y agoIndeed he does!
- klohto 7y agoRed Hat
- shmerl 7y agoThere are. Those who don't use patents as an anti-competitive weapon.
- scarface74 7y agoThe patents related to 5G are mostly under FRAND since they are required as part of the 5G standard and Qualcomm owns most of them. Who besides Qualcomm even has to technical know how and the scale to create chips at a profit besides Qualcomm and in the future Apple?
- sct202 7y agoMediatek and Huawei (RIP)
- tw04 7y agoI'm going to be honest, at this point, after blatantly stealing tech from both Cisco and Samsung, how can you even claim Huawei developed the technical know how and didn't just steal it?
- TheSpiceIsLife 7y agoThe question was who has not who developed.
- WoahNoun 7y agoBecause they have a lot of patents. Either they developed the tech in the patents independently or they stole tech which other companies declined to patent. The latter option doesn't make sense since everyone in the wireless industry makes money from patent licensing. (Opposed to something like DRAM manufacturing tech where you generally aren't licensing patents and your tech is your competitive advantage)
- threeseed 7y agoThere is a third option. They acquired patents: https://www.iam-media.com/frandseps/huawei-acquires-patents-firm-run-former-pantech-ip-head https://www.iam-media.com/frandseps/huawei-acquires-patents-... But to be fair Huawei is spending a large amount of their revenue on R&D so not surprised they are inventing new technologies. That said we also know that they have stolen a lot of IP in the past (and maybe now).
- georgeburdell 7y agoApple would be wise to buy the patents only and relocate any of the Germans to Cupertino. Germany and most of Europe is extremely uncompetetive due to the lackadaisical and conservative work culture. I have worked with many German suppliers in cutting edge applications and most of the time I end up choosing an Asian or Angophone supplier when the German one says it will take 6mo to add a feature on some existing product
