I am nervous this means Apple will hold back features from iOS to get people to buy an iPad. For example, they announced the new Files app with iPadOS but there is no reason that shouldn't all be available on an iPhone.
- saagarjha 7y agoiPhone doesn’t have a screen large enough or a USB connector…how would you use the “new Files app”?
- rhodysurf 7y agoTo access SMB shares on the go for one, which is something else they announced in the app.
- colechristensen 7y agoIt has a USB connector with the appropriate adapter. Pixel 3A comes with a USB C to A (female) adapter in the box which makes it seem like this kind of thing is going mainstream.
- stingraycharles 7y agoSandisk has a good product for that: https://www.sandisk.com/home/mobile-device-storage/ixpand https://www.sandisk.com/home/mobile-device-storage/ixpand It has both lightning and USB connections.
- joemi 7y agoWhile I don't think that those necessarily mean it can't work well on iPhone, it does bring up an important point about feature differences between iPad and iPhone, and one that Apple surely considers: They are _different_ devices, and are _different_ sizes. Some functions will work better on one device than on the other, and vice versa, because of this. This is why it makes sense that iPadOS is now a thing, and why features might exist with one and not the other. It shows that Apple is carefully designing the OS for the different devices.
- zapzupnz 7y agoYou'd use the new Files app the same way you'd use the current Files app … USB disks aren't the only way to use it. Seriously, am I being gaslighted here? The Files app is already available on iOS 12, I think it was introduced in 11, and it's definitely on iPhones. Everybody talking about it like a hypothetical iPad-only app is seriously confusing me.
- coliveira 7y agoThere are already features that are available only for iPads. This only gives a name for the version that runs on iPads.
- rhodysurf 7y agoTrue. I am just wary of the line being drawn on the conservative side. Edit: wary not weary lol
- graeme 7y agoWary. I think the battle on this is already lost, but "weary" means tired, and is pronounced "weery"
- asark 7y agoFWIW Garner classifies this error as "stage 1" (rejected) in a recent edition, so we're still safe for a while, at least in professional writing. However, I do see this mistake more often than I see either word used correctly in non-professional Web writing, to include much work that is paid, but neither written nor edited at anything like a professional level. Garner attributes the error—among pros, anyway—to closeness to "leery". I'd guess it's more often just bad phonemic awareness when committed by the general public, though.
- antisemiotic 7y agoAs a non-native speaker I'm afraid that some day I'll need a dictionary of homophones to decode written English.
- asark 7y agoThese two aren't homophones, but (in American English, anyway) "weary" does sound like "weird" rather than like "wear", while "wary" sounds like "wear" but not like "war", so it's kind of worse.

- fumar 7y agoI was also wondering how Apple will decide which feature will go to iPadOS vs iOS. The files app is a great example. Will there be a new trickle down path from iPadOS to iOS?
- zapzupnz 7y agoHow is the Files app a great example? It's available on iOS already.
- criddell 7y agoIt goes the other way as well. There are already a bunch of iPhone-only features in iOS.
- justadudeama 7y agoLike the calculator app.
- criddell 7y agoAnd the Health app and parts of Apple Pay and all the Apple Watch support stuff.
- dave5104 7y agoThis one boggles my mind. I probably wouldn't need it often, but there are some times where I wish I had it handy instead of needing to pick up my phone. (And without needing to install a 3rd party app.)
- servercobra 7y agoThis blew my mind when I realized it. I spent a solid like 10 minutes looking through the AppStore and my folders for the original. Why???

- virtuallynathan 7y agoiOS is getting files and gamepad support: https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-13-preview/features/ https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-13-preview/features/
- sbarre 7y agoIt specifically says "PS4" and "Xbox One S" controllers.. I hope that just means "Bluetooth" and they're not doing some exclusive BS where only those two specific controllers will work. I have a 30$ 8BitDo Bluetooth controller (that works on PS4, Xbox, Switch, Windows, MacOs) that I'd love to just throw in my travel bag with my iPad when I'm on the road.
- JimDabell 7y agoiOS has had files and gamepad support for years. The new things announced today are: - SMB fileshare and SD card access in Files on iOS. - PS4 and Xbox One gamepad support for the HomePod & iOS.
- teilo 7y agoiOS had MFi gamepad support. It has never had general gamepad support. Not sure it does even now. At least now you can have a gamepad that will work with iOS and all Mac games. Most Mac games do not work with MFi controllers.
- JustSomeNobody 7y agoIndeed. I really hope the SMB native support in Files comes to iOS. For example, I currently use Documents by Readdle, but I would love to eliminate that step.
- rhodysurf 7y agoSame. I was shocked earlier this year when I opened up the files app and there was no ability to connect to server
- DisruptiveDave 7y agoSide note: checking in from Bonnet Shores here!
- zapzupnz 7y agoIndeed there's no reason those shouldn't be available on iPhone, so thankfully they are. The name is just marketing; if in doubt, just see what's new in iOS in general.
- dangoor 7y agoiPhone is Apple's biggest product by a large margin and it's in a super competitive space. There's no way they'll hold back features that reasonably work on it.
- george_perez 7y agoFiles is an iOS feature. It was added in iOS 11. This new update just has new cosmetic features like the column view. I'm sure the external drive and server connections work on iOS as well. This is because iPadOS is just a marketing name for iOS 13. iPadOS still runs the same Springboard as iOS and is referred as iOS internally.
- sneak 7y agoBigger issues to me are the inabilities of iPads compared to iPhones: no watch pairing, no phone call or sms support, et c.
