The more I work with the Pi, the more convicted I become that it was mostly created to offload a very flawed chip...
It "works" because a lot of people spent tons of hours to patch it in software
- imtringued 7y agoWhat did you expect? It's built on a graphics chip that had some ARM cores sprinkled over as an afterthought.
- panpanna 7y agoDear god, this is so true. Even the latest versions are like that. That's why multicore and io are so bad on Pi despite receiving lots of attention from kernel and distro people.
- rathel 7y agoDon't get me started on other single board computers. They are much, much worse. Take Tinkerboard with its Rockchip SoC for example. MIPI CSI camera interface sometimes works, most of the times not. For reasons unknown it loads Sony sensor kernel driver even if you specify Omnivision overlay.
- snvzz 7y agoIn my experience with SBCs (I have a lot of rpi B: 1, 2, 3, 3+), the rpi is the least reliable. It has a strong tendency to corrupt the SD card (most users who are aware of that will have root on USB), and is extremely picky with power supplies. To the point I believe it actually expects the voltage to be equal or higher to 5V no matter the load. Raspberry pi have given me nothing more than nightmares, be them my devices or my acquaintances'. My other SBCs (cubieboard, pine64) have, in contrast, made me happier. When asked these days, I tend to suggest rock64, as it's priced similarly as the rpi but offers much higher specs and reliability.
