Ask HN: What Is the General Magic of Today?
I just watched the General Magic documentary and I’m wondering if there are any startups around today that resemble General Magic (e.g. have a similar culture and high concentration of talented people working extremely hard on something that has the possibility to be hugely world changing). I know most startups would claim they are like this, but in my experience they don’t really have the same culture and ambition portrayed in the movie.
- eaenki 7y agonot sure about the culture, but VR, space and robotics are probably the niches to look into for a similar company

- la_barba 7y agoA lot of anti-cancer and anti-bacterial drug labs. Probably gene-therapy too..
- Konnstann 7y agoBiotech in general seems like a good fit.
- joezydeco 7y agoCulture, ambition, a very pedigreed group of employees that have had success in previous projects, and a concept that had been tempered by Apple before starting out.
- MindyKornish 7y agoThere's is a mysterious secret website that you never heard of . The Chief code architect of this site has worked for both Google and Microsoft . This secret website is so unlike anything you have ever seen and has come to the attention of the U.S intelligence apparatus located in the Ashburn Virginia area because of the sheer high level of traffic from Chinese proxies based in Indonesia . To quote the anonymous source who clued us in to the existence of the secret website " We watch , what the enemy watches and they're watching this thing hard..very hard " The secret website uses a 3 dimensional user interface to view the internet which has roused the curiosity of China to the potential of this technology concept . - karmakaze 7y agoMagic Leap is the most obvious one that comes to mind. I can't say if Facebook/Oculus has set as high goals. Others could have been working on grand tech but not that I'm aware of: - Amazon: Diamond Age Dynabook - Netflix: eyeTV - Microsoft: Hololens already - Apple: eyePhone
