- chrisseaton 7y agoHave you ever tried a hand-cranked radio or torch? They need a lot of cranking. I'm not sure it would be tractable.
- p1necone 7y agoThis kinda looks like it has an epaper screen? Or at least a simple black and white lcd. Potentially uses a lot less power than a torch.
- soulofmischief 7y agoAt that price, it likely wouldn't be e-ink. But even more so, the framerate of e-ink tech currently on the market isn't suitable for moving graphics. There are a few companies working on different ways to solve this problem but the existing e-ink patent is quite a thorn.
- bduerst 7y agoThe demo was definitely not an e-ink screen, but then again, it was a simulation so who knows for sure. I tried to find battery specs on the page but couldn't.
- ebg13 7y agoThat's because they all crank so easily. Surely if they used gears and required more force to convert from few rotations to many it would be better?
- tomcam 7y agoI think it would add unacceptable weight. And the mechanical stress would probably cause a redesign of the whole product. You don’t want the screen to crack the first time your 8 year-old gets a little enthusiastic about winding it.
- Aeolun 7y agoI don’t know. It already looks pretty robust.
- gowld 7y agoThey could add an automatic self-cranking mode? Or an add-on crank-automator - perhaps solar-powered.
