No one talks about the used car market for EVs. The battery is by far the most expensive part and the most volnurable to fail. So much so that buying a used EV is a much riskier bet.
- murukesh_s 7y agoHow about replacing the battery? And paying minus the battery?, I see it's much less riskier as there are lesser mechanical parts that are difficult to replace. Also there could be a used EVs marketplace where the battery can be serviced or even rented out (making it less riskier)
- salty_biscuits 7y agoIt isn't that hard to test if it is toast though. The rest of the drive train should be much more robust than an ICE. Much fewer parts and less to go wrong. I can't see a battery being any more expensive to replace than say a diesel engine.
- rapsey 7y agoA diesel engine will do an order of magnitude more miles.
- salty_biscuits 7y ago1000 cycles at 400km per charge. Hmmm... I don't think that is an order of magnitude
- jillesvangurp 7y agoNot without a lot of very expensive maintenance. The cost of that easily adds up to battery replacements/servicing. Batteries are expensive now but will drop in price over time as economies of scale kick in and current technology gets replaced by any of the better things currently stuck in the R&D stages of the many startups working on this. Diesel engines are not getting cheaper/better by a similar rate. Worse, investments in that are at this point being shelved in favor of EV investments. Diesels right now are about as good as they will ever be.
- eecc 7y agoI dare say it’s quite the opposite. Just write off and replace the battery and the rest is practically pristine.
- rapsey 7y agoA new battery will be pretty close to the price of the entire used car. Im not sure that is a valid economic proposition.
- tirant 7y agoI’m sure that will create a market for certified battery replacement workshops.
- serpi 7y agoCitation please! This is FUD otherwise.
- imtringued 7y agoI can find e-Ups for 10000€ (new 26000€). A new battery will most likely cost 10000€ too.
- rapsey 7y agoTesla battery is $6500. I doubt other EVs can get much lower.
- mceachen 7y agoFor a LEAF, $2.3k for a refurb, and >$6k for new. https://electrek.co/2018/03/26/nissan-leaf-battery-pack-replacement-program/ https://electrek.co/2018/03/26/nissan-leaf-battery-pack-repl... Unfortunately, that's in the ballpark for a used LEAF.
- OrgNet 7y agonot FUD if it is true even without citation (you are allowed to do research on your own)
