This is why we invested in Apple Home, since that is the least likely to go away completely off all the options. Any Google service other than Gmail and Google Maps may come and go so while they offer amazing features at the cost of invading your privacy, there is no guarantee they will there in the long term.
- NikolaNovak 7y ago>> Any Google service other than Gmail and Google Maps may come and go I felt Gmail was at _significant_ risk when Inbox was announced; result was unexpected.
- dragonwriter 7y agoInbox by Google was never a separate service it was an alternative front-end UI, so I don't see how it would indicate a risk to Gmail the service (which has had many UI changes over the years, including a clumsy and incomplete incorporation of Inbox features.)
- NikolaNovak 7y agoI guess we had different perception - it happens :). Understanding that underlying infra, when you go deep enough, may have been shared between Gmail & Inbox, same is much the case for all email services anywhere; it IS the front-end UI, and featured enabled by it, that by and large makes an email product. Marketing at the time seemed to indicate and place Inbox as a separate product, and more than one note from Google hinted that it would replace Gmail. In hindsight it obviously didn't happen, but many of us thought it presented a significant risk to Gmail; just as recently people were looking for "Inbox alternatives" due to its demise, at the time we were searching for "Gmail alternatives" due to potential replacement by Inbox (which I think was a brilliant idea and potentially implementation - but I'm too much of a control freak to utilize:).
- nutjob2 7y agoYeah, Apple has never cancelled a product.
- jmontano 7y agoI think DIY is the best route. Considering change is inevitable, I guess the safest route is to start and lead that change yourself. In the end we are all humans even companies like Apple are run by humans.
- deadmutex 7y agoThis isn't scalable though. This is similar to running a wireless network for yourself vs your non-tech family members. For family members, it is easy to just get Google Wifi/Eero, and have good wifi through the home. For your own home, you _may_ consider running OpenWRT, and creating a bunch of VLANs, etc.
- DannyBee 7y agoApple has cancelled plenty of things, it's just much better at erasing history and pretending those things never existed than the other companies.
- throwayEngineer 7y agoApple Marketing is best in class for hijacking human minds.
- tinus_hn 7y agoI suppose that’s why instead of showing examples you are making broad sweeping claims?
- boulos 7y agoRemember Ping? :). https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes_Ping https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes_Ping Edit: on a more serious note, what if you loved PPC development? Apple went x86 and now you can’t develop there. It’s my main fear whenever there’s talk of them using their ARM cores for a new laptop and macOS. To be clear, I think they pulled that transition off really well, and suspect they could do x86 => ARM better than anyone (closed ecosystem, tons of LLVM people). It would still mean they were deprecating and cancelling x86 though (presumably with a Rosetta-like translator for a while).
- rbritton 7y agoTwo examples are the Airport line of products and the iPods. While the iPod Touch is still made, nothing else is. That said, they still have received recent software updates, and I personally find Apple products more palatable than anything Google or Amazon.
- reading-at-work 7y agoI don't think iPods are a good example. To my knowledge, if you still own an iPod it still works. They didn't release an update that bricks them all, they just stopped making new ones, which is a totally normal thing for a company to do.
- chaostheory 7y agoI always wished that Apple bought Nest instead of Google. It just made more sense. Of course this would never happen because of Apple politics, which was the reason Tony Faddell was forced out in the first place.
