I didn't realise that IRC was immune to white supremacists, sharing of furry paedophilic content, and … I feel like the last dig risks being seen as the pot calling the kettle black, to insult other people simply for having a sense of fun and whimsy — it is a network mainly targeted at gamers, after all.

Where the Rust channels are hosted is not a Mozilla decision. It was a Rust community decision made some time ago, when the set of alternatives was smaller than it is today. Separately, Mozilla has decided to shut down its IRC server. This impacts the users who remain on IRC, but the decision was made by the various community teams a while ago.

The real issues more unique to discord there is their devs drinking their own koolaid, and it being proprietary of course. Just jump into the discord devs server and any reasonable problem (not being able to filter file uploads to images only) is excused with "write a bot". or the fact that you cannot mass delete yourself from the platform. Also blocking is a non feature "intentionally". Discord is made by inexperienced devs that move fast, break things, and will break people's lives when that inevitably leads to data dumps. It's similiar tactics to Facebook. Sadly due to bandwidth costs it's not possible to compete. Media upload and sharing is now an expected feature. VoIP is too. P2P is legitimately a personal safety risk due to IP's in the U.S. being legal for swat to kick doors down and shoot first.

Isn't it a beauty of capitalism that a product can be made by a white supremacist furry pedophile elf manchild and nobody has to care about it as long as they stay a productive member of society and don't threaten anyone?

  I'm hoping that was actually a socratic joke, but just in case: If only the majority of white supremacists held their views passively without threatening anyone or enabling others to threaten people via campaign donations and the normalization of racist tropes, --- we wouldn't be teetering on this ugly precipice.
