The AlphaSmart Neo 2 keyboard: for writing without Twitter
- ryantgtg 8y agoI have one. I needed to install linux kernel 4.4 for it to be recognized by my computer as a usb device. Kind of annoying that more recent kernels don't know what to do with it! Is that considered a "regression"?
- copperx 8y agoBut why did you connect it to your server? All joking aside, I thought the Alpha was supposed to emulate a keyboard when transferring data. Is that not the case?
- ryantgtg 8y agoIt does. I just couldn’t get it to mount with any kernel newer than 4.4. But with 4.4 it’s plug n play!
- davidgerard 8y ago(author here) The laptop I'm using it with is Xubuntu 18.04, running a 4.13-series kernel, so I suspect it's something at your end.
- ryantgtg 8y agoThat’s very helpful, thanks! I’m using Manjaro, and tried it with 4.9 and 4.14. I should give it another shot now that I’m using 4.19. And to the point of your article: I’m in the same boat as you. I spent a good week researching folding keyboards and other small but not too mini keyboards that I could use with my phone while on the bus and in bed. And like you I concluded that I didn’t want to buy one without trying one first. I wasn’t even convinced I could type faster in a mini keyboard than on my phone. I bought the Neo 2, and I think it’s fun for first drafts. But I don’t use it as much as I would like.
- jodrellblank 8y agoBut .. if the internet is such a distraction because there's so much to read on it, maybe we don't need more writing?
- anotheryou 8y agoAnd if you have that little self-control, that you need a device that absolutely can't twitter, maybe that's the issue. But you phone in airplane mode (it becomes really booring with that), plug in a keyboard, hack away.
- NikkiA 8y agoSo it's a Z88 for the new millenium, nice.
