Since at least windows 7 it even works on windows, although you need to do some chipset cleanup by hand after reboot before installing the new ones (if you need them). I wouldn't try that experience on previous versions on windows though.

And you need to reactivate windows if you've swapped the motherboard / cpu.

That’s true to a certain extent. Once in a while a system won’t like a drastic change like going from an AMD chipset to Intel and you may get a bluescreen on reboot.
