Emacs Dired + Tramp -> no need for any other tool.
One super awesome Dired feature is C-x C-q to edit a folder like a file (all Emacs commands work here, like macros which are easier & faster to get right than most shell commands). To save your changes after editing, press C-c C-c.
- bhengaij 8y agoExcept I have to open emacs in one full second
- apjana 8y ago`nnn` is not tied to a single editor. It can work with anything. Yesternight I ended up writing a plugin for vim as one of the users requested. So probably someone can contribute a plugin (?) for emacs as well. Unfortunately my understanding of emacs is limited. And that's probably one of the problems with editor-specific plugins.
- earthscienceman 8y agoI would love to hear other dired features that people use. I'm just now getting a comprehensive understanding of how great dired is.
- atmosx 8y agoDoes it support file transfer over ftp, sftp, s3, etc?
- ISO-morphism 8y agoYes, that's where tramp comes in, although s3 might need a separate plugin. For me the best part of dired is "do-what-i-mean" mode, dired-dwim. You basically get the output of `ls -la` and edit it as a text file. When you save, dired figures out changed names/permission bits/etc and does what you mean to those files.
- jsilence 8y agoDoes dired have some sort of picture browse mode/functionality? That would be awesome!
- cjohansson 8y agoI agree, that solution has endless of possibilities, I can’t think of any feature it doesn’t have
- apjana 8y ago`vidir` does the same in vim and readily integrates with `nnn`.
