On the subject of accelerating the transition towards sustainable energy, Elon Musk recently said:
> Without Tesla, ... There would still be a transition to sustainable energy, but it would take much longer. History will judge this, obviously, but I would say on the order of 10 years, maybe 20 years.

- adventured 8y agoHistory will judge that Tesla's competitors made an extraordinary mistake in waiting 15 years to try to directly compete with Tesla in EVs. At the rate they're going they'll get to $50b in annual sales before most of the auto majors each have even a small fleet of EV vehicles available for purchase.
- mayukh 8y agoHistory is awesome at judging mistakes (pretty easy once you know who won). 50bn is not that big as % of the the top 10 automobiles sales combined. With that said I hope history will acknowledge the impact that Tesla and Musk have had/will have.
- curuinor 8y agoNissan makes more EV's than Tesla by a bit.
- adventured 8y agoNissan has definitely done a fair job with the Leaf. I'm not aware that they're still outselling Tesla on a quarterly basis now, due to the Model 3's sales explosion. Do you have the latest numbers on Nissan's EV sales for 2018 - how does that stack up to what's expected of Tesla for the full year? Tesla's primary competitors are BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Audi, Infiniti. Anyone selling a lot of cars over ~$45,000.
- tigershark 8y agoIt’s totally false. Model 3 sales are about 15 times greater than leaf sales in the last months.
- goodcanadian 8y agoI would say it's not totally false. It was a bit hard to find comparable numbers, but it seems to me that Model 3 sales have outpaced Leaf sales recently as you note. However, it was true until quite recently that Nissan Leaf was the best selling, and it appears that it is the all time top selling EV model overall (Model S would appear to be number two). Tesla may have also taken the title of most cars overall, but that is spread across three models, and again is due to the recent boom in Model 3 sales which may or may not be sustainable. Now that the market is proven, it would be fairly easy for Nissan to introduce new models if they like, and other companies are actively introducing EV models (which are probably impacting Nissan as well as Tesla). It is not at all clear to me that Tesla is as dominant as you seem to imply. It is fairly clear to me that Nissan has so far done more in bringing EVs to the mainstream than Tesla has (not to minimise Tesla's very significant contribution).
- tigershark 8y agoIt’s not hard at all. Nissan Leaf sales figures for August 2018 are 1315: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/insideevs.com/nissan-leaf-sales-august-2018/amp/ https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/insideevs.com/nissan-leaf-sal... For the Tesla Model 3 are 20450: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-august-passenger-car-overall-auto-sales/amp/ https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.teslarati.com/tesla-model... So model 3 was selling actually 15.5 more than Nissan leaf. And the gap will only increase as the production increases.
- marvin 8y agoAre these global sales? Leafs are everywhere in Norway, so that would mean that we get the lion's share of the entire production.
- vinay427 8y agoI don't think he's wrong, but this can be said about existing pioneers in electrification as well (e.g. Toyota, Honda) which have already brought electrification to the masses in the US with improved efficiency and no compromises. It's rare that I don't see an electric hybrid taxi/Uber/Lyft in the US.
- agumonkey 8y agoI wonder if hybrid should become the new bottom. No ICE unless it has some small electric power and regenerative braking.
- rcMgD2BwE72F 8y agoBe careful with hybrids, especially if you can't plug them in. Even the plugin hybrids might be worst for the environment: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-46152853 https://www.bbc.com/news/business-46152853 (transporting a heavy battery and never charge it is pretty dumb). We really need to skip the hybrid phase and go directly to 100% BEV.
- agumonkey 8y agoI don't get it. Hybrid charges on use and breaking. To save on traffic jam, stops / lights and random city driving. That's how I understood it.. am I wrong ? I get that companies might buy things and the use them wrong but that's another issue.
