You've received a lot of responses, but I'm shocked that nobody has told you most US cops are assholes. Most of the times I've interacted with cops, they were not smiling. Sometimes they were not evil, but most of the times they are asking questions to see if they can arrest you for something. For example, one time a cop came up to me while I was taking a nap in my car. He asked me questions for 5 minutes straight to see if I could admit to any equipment failures on my car, or if I was drunk (despite not operating the vehicle). In the US, you must exercise extreme caution around cops, at all times, period.
