Machines of Loving Grace: 100 years of typewriter evolution
- matt_the_bass 8y agoHa! I immediately thought of the band Machines of Loving Grace (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machines_of_Loving_Grace https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machines_of_Loving_Grace). I guess that shows my age. :)
- EdwardDiego 8y agoI was disappointed it wasn't the band also.
- Mizza 8y agoAlso, the Adam Curtis documentary series, "All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace": https://vimeo.com/groups/96331/videos/80799353 https://vimeo.com/groups/96331/videos/80799353
- corysama 8y agoI believe the origin of the term is from https://allpoetry.com/All-Watched-Over-By-Machines-Of-Loving-Grace https://allpoetry.com/All-Watched-Over-By-Machines-Of-Loving...
- matt_the_bass 8y agoCould be. Thanks for the reference.
- dhodges 8y agoYes, Richard Brautigan's most well-known poem. Brautigan was a poet to the hippie generation. His book "Trout Fishing in America" was everywhere in the late 60's. It's interesting to re-read "All watched over by machines of loving grace" and see how Brautigan anticipated AI, possibly influenced by McLuhan. I don't think Brautigan was thinking of typewriters when he wrote this line.
- cam_l 8y agoYou are probably right. But on the other hand, olivetti brought out the first personal computer in the mid 60's. And of course olivetti did research into a.i. So it is not too far to see the (if imagined) link. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivetti https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivetti
- bigiain 8y agoMe too... <sings>You can't place faith in material things, material things will fail you. A hurricane triggered by a butterfly's wings, your conspirators betray you..
- dang 8y agoOk, we've put some typewriters up above to ward off this case of the dreaded title fever. It's an interesting site, so hopefully we can discuss it in its own right, rather than alternative associations to this quote.
- matt_the_bass 8y agoThat’s a good call. Thanks for editing the title Dan!
