I mean, if I eat one piece of candy a year, I won't gain weight either. Somehow I don't think that's the story they're trying to sell.

- SketchySeaBeast 8y agoYeah, not gaining weight is possibly believable - losing weight is ridiculous.
- wolco 8y agoIt can be true. After antibiotics I lost so much weight rapidly. I can eat bags of sugar without gaining any weight. I can't breakdown fat at all so there is more to the story then sugar = weight increase. It really depends on the bacteria we have in our guts.
- village-idiot 8y agoTo be fair, there’s reason to worry about sugar consumption above and beyond weight gain. Advanced glycation endproducts come to mind. Also, if you’re worried about your gut bacteria, know that excessive amounts of sugar are well known to affect you negatively in that area.
- SketchySeaBeast 8y agoIf you can't break down sugar or fat, what are you living on? You must eat a heinous amount of protein each day.
- village-idiot 8y agoHumans really aren’t efficient enough at gluconeogenesis to live off pure protein. It’s one of the reasons why that last chicken breast can become revolting, your body has the ability to declare a hard stop on protein consumption. Well, for solid foods. Turns out our brains don’t think liquid calories “count”, which is why protein shakes are a thing. They let body builders massively over protein themselves. That shakes are now a cultural thing for weight loss is absolutely hilarious to me.
- wolco 8y agoI eat a ton of fruit based sugar, plant based food and some protein. No matter how much dried fruit I eat I can't seem to gain a pound. Quantities like 400 grams of raisins.
- nradov 8y agoThat could be partially due to the fiber in all that dried fruit acting as a laxative.
- SketchySeaBeast 8y agoIce cream comes in 1 gallon tubs. I believe in you.
- PavlikPaja 8y agoNot necessarily. I think it works like this: 1. Standard metabolism: You need certain amouns of calories, and a certain amount of it must come from carbs. If you need 1200kCal in carbs, you will feel hungry until you get that 1200kCal in carbs, no matter how much fat you eat. It might be 1250kCal in plain rice, or 2500kCal in fatty chips, but it must contain 1200kCal in carbs. 2. Keto metabolism: A part of the carb need can be fulfilled with fat, at the cost of lower efficiency. You won't be hungry, almost regardless of how little carbs you eat. It's easy to see how in 1. eating sugar could help you losing weight by making you eat less in general.
