Renault has been doing electric cars for some time.
One of my friends drove me recently in his Renault Zoe (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_Zoe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_Zoe ) and I was favorably impressed.
A new, cheaper and with extended range, version should be available next year: http://www.auto-moto.com/nouveautes/scoop/renault-zoe-2019-174346.html http://www.auto-moto.com/nouveautes/scoop/renault-zoe-2019-1...
- bufferoverflow 8y agoRenault Zoe has a small battery, only 210km, while Model 3 is 500km.
- GW150914 8y agoDisclaimer. The following comment was re-written after Greg replied: Responding to Greg’s points, if you buy out the battery lease on the long range car, it’s $34,000 dollars. The Tesla Model 3 you can buy today starts at $54,000 dollars. I didn’t know about NEDC vs EPA, so I was off about the range. Looking here it seems like a rough average for the range is 284km. https://pushevs.com/2018/07/29/range-efficiency-test-of-10-electric-cars/ https://pushevs.com/2018/07/29/range-efficiency-test-of-10-e... Maybe it’s worth it for most people to pay $20,000 for ~200km more range, but certainly not in Europe. I’m also consistently met with points that 99% of trips are below 70mi. Plus as I said earlier, you get actual instruments and not one massive touchscreen, and quality control from a company not struggling to make cars at any cost. Then, if something breaks you don’t have to wait months for the part, and if you order a car now, you get it, you don’t go on an indeterminate wait list while they hold your money.
- greglindahl 8y agoYou're comparing NEDC range with EPA range, and the price to buy a Model 3 with the price to buy a Zoe with a leased battery.
- ceejayoz 8y agoRange is likely less of an issue for European purchasers.
- kisstheblade 8y agoNo, it's over 300km (source: have actually drived that much on a charge). It's an excellent car, can't imagine what a tesla has to offer over it (I don't care about 0-100km/h speed, ie. the zoe is quite fast enough, and the Zoe's range is suitable for my uses). I guess the build quality is also better with the Zoe, and it doesn't have a ridiculous giant touch screen in the center console.
- antr 8y agoI can vouch for the Renault Zoe. It's a superb car: fast, modern, roomy, perfect for the city and 150-200km trips, etc. Without a doubt, I'd buy the Reneault Zoe over a Tesla Model 3.
- sergiosgc 8y agoThe Zoe is a great car, as is the Nissan Leaf that came out off the same development effort. However, you can't really compare it to the model 3. The model 3 is more upscale, to be compared with a BMW Series 3. What I mean is that you pay a lot more (~20k) but get into luxury territory. The Zoe is like an electric Renault Clio.
- antr 8y agoI agree. However, from the reviews I've been reading from all three Tesla models is that their built quality is far from their Audi, BMW and Mercedes equivalents. I guess that what I'm trying to say is that the Model 3 value proposition is that it is an EV, but quality/finishes it is yet to match others. So then, if I want an EV, I'd go for a Zoe from a value for money perspective.
- btian 8y ago0-60mph in 8.2s is anything but fast. Performance Model 3 can do it in 3.5s

- CountHackulus 8y agoPerformance is nice and all but for driving on city streets it's really unnecessary. 8.2 seconds is plenty fast for modern driving and is roughly the same as a 2017 Honda Accord.
- btian 8y agoYes Renault Zoe may well be a good city car, like Smart fortwo, but it's not in the same class of Model 3.
- maxxxxx 8y agoMys sister has a Zoe. Really nice and the price is right!
- sergiosgc 8y agoI didn't find the price point right, because of the monthly battery lease. The battery lease eats out the price advantage of electricity vs gasoline, at least for my yearly mileage (20 000km).
- atmosx 8y agoAre there any other alternatives?
- shpx 8y agoI drove a Nissan Leaf recently; it was nice. They used to look dorky, but the second generation released in 2017 looks like a regular car. Its range is less than the Model 3 though, 243 km vs 350 km (or 500 km if you get the bigger battery). Wikipedia says they're coming out with a 360 km version later this year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Leaf#Second_generation_(2017%E2%80%93present) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Leaf#Second_generation_...
