Heavy Stuff
- jere 8y agoInteresting article and really highlights how stupid we are as a society to keep destroying ourselves with this stuff. The writing style was distracting though. I enjoyed it but felt guilty for doing so because it felt too indulgent for lack of a better word.
- justinator 8y agoI remember learning about leaded gasoline and how poisonous it is. Not used (much) in cars anymore but still used in small aircraft. I'm reminded of this everytime a plane like that lifts up from the runway that's just a few miles away...
- extralego 8y agoIt’s so ignorant of the author to imply someone decided to put lead in their own water supply. And then to wonder why? We know why, and it was no surprise. It will happen again and again until we learn our lesson. Capitalism is unstable. It incentivizes manipulation and cruelty. As long as those incentives exist, only fools like this will convince themselves they are investigating a mystery.
- dang 8y agoWould you please stop using HN for ideological battle? Especially in the form of unsubstantive rants. You do this a lot, and we eventually ban accounts that do it, regardless of which ideology they favor. That's in the guidelines: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html. This is not because we're capitalist pigs, by the way. It's because such discussions quickly trample the kind of discussions this site exists for.
- georgeecollins 8y agoI recommend reading Elephant in the Brain which points out human's capacity for self deception. One example is the idea that we see ourselves as caring about our health. The truth is that we like to signal that we care about our health to others for a variety of social reasons, but in practice our actions show that we care a lot less then we actually believe.
