...that and we'd better start inventing some new antibiotics now. As it is now, physicans can barely prescribe them responsibly. If they are available as cold medicine antibiotic resistance will surge even harder than it is now. antibiotic resistance is a dramatically underappreciated problem.
- stochastic_monk 8y agoThat’s a good, simple example demonstrating a problem. I also think pharmacokinetic effects are likely underappreciated by the general public.
- mullingitover 8y agoIsn't human misuse of antibiotics a drop in the ocean compared to the livestock feed? Pretty sure we could completely stop all human misuse and we'd accomplish nearly nothing toward the goal of stopping antibiotic resistance.
- vibrio 8y agoI very much agree that live stock antibiotic use is a major issue, even with the recent regulatory advances, but I cannot agree that minimizing human misuse is trivial. Ignoring either issue leaves a flank wide open for attack.
- phil21 8y agoThis is why I feel only antibiotics should require a prescription - because of the tragedy of the commons. And yes, I mean only antibiotics. You popping Vicodin for fun doesn't directly affect me, so it's none of my damn business.
