- sp332 8y agoThere are tons of autoplaying videos, and each one takes a few % of my CPU. The biggest difference for me was the one just after the heading "Who needs December 30, 2011 anyway". Turning off autoplay (e.g. media.autoplay.enabled in Firefox) fixed it. You can still play each video by right-clicking on it.
- vorg 8y agoThe autoplaying videos are a pain, I couldn't find "media.autoplay.enabled" in my Preferences menu in Firefox, and this in the article calling me "clueless" doesn't help: > it is predictable that some clueless commenter on Hacker News will complain that this page has autoplaying video on it
- sp332 8y agoType about:config into the address bar and then search in there.
- ATsch 8y agoyeah, that map zoom animation eats half a core for me
- MBCook 8y agoThe colors make it harder to read than necessary, and the text is bigger than I prefer on my phone. Reader mode didn’t work, so I gave up.
- holman 8y agoSorry about the lack of support for Reader mode; not entirely sure why that's happening (it's a pretty basic markup structure). If anyone's got thoughts on that, let me know and I'm happy to fix it. (Finna hang on to my videos, though! Life doesn't always need to be so one dimensional, particularly for one-offs like this.)
- 314 8y agoBut it does look gorgeous and it absolutely screams luxury layout and typesetting... so there’s that.
- cryptonector 8y agoHuh, I guess I need to enable more scripts.
- kalleboo 8y agoWhat browser is that? In Safari it seems to use negligible CPU when just text is on the screen, which goes up to maybe 20% of one core if one of the big videos is visible. It's also not enough to get the CPU to raise it's frequency/power consumption out of the idle state it is on, say, hacker news.
