The fact that these people KNOW it's called "SWAT"ting means they know that a SWAT team is going to go to the house with guns. The people that called it in are more guilty than the police.
Yes it sucks that we don't train police better, but they should definitely make the punishment so severe that it helps reduce future SWATTING calls.
- agildehaus 8y agoThey know a SWAT team is going to go because they know police will overreact to a phone call.
- rhacker 8y agoThat's exactly what I'm saying - yes the police bear some responsibility, but the caller still wanted this dangerous situation to exist.
- agildehaus 8y agoThe root problem is the overreaction to the phone call. Swatting wouldn't exist without police overreaction and lack of verification. We can control how police act by settings standards and demanding better. We cannot prevent terrible people from making false 911 calls.
- GFischer 8y agoExactly, swatting DOESN'T exist outside the U.S. (save a rare counterexample). Cops in my country aren't great, but they don't do this, ever.
- pavel_lishin 8y agoWouldn't it make more sense to reduce the incentive to commit the crime, rather than increase punishment? Ramping up punishments doesn't seem to deter criminals, and study after study seems to confirm this.
- zaphar 8y agoThe best solution is to do both. Increase punishment and also reduce incentive. They aren't mutually exclusive.
- rhacker 8y agoSure, but I think that's a larger issue than SWATTING, right wouldn't that comment apply to all crime in general. If you can point me to the studies and what exactly is proposed to deter crime without punishment I'm all ears :)
- pavel_lishin 8y agohttps://nij.gov/five-things/pages/deterrence.aspx https://nij.gov/five-things/pages/deterrence.aspx > 4. Increasing the severity of punishment does little to deter crime. My point is that if SWAT teams stop shooting random people going for a walk, they'll stop being used as weapons.
- emodendroket 8y agoThey're guilty, but I don't see how it follows thst the person who actually did the shooting is blameless.
- jumbalaya2346 8y agoRemind me again, who fired the gun?
- hinkley 8y agoIt's doesn't suck. It's murder.
- joe_the_user 8y agoGiven random person through-out the world could make a Swatting call, and more broadly, hearsay evidence of a terrible crime is always going to exist in potential, if you don't secure your procedures against killing people only on hearsay you're guilty of something kind of terrible.
