What governments can do for the losers from free trade
- HillaryBriss 8y agoIt is now clear that globalisation’s cheerleaders did globalisation no favour by ignoring the losers. In fact, they helped deliver President Donald Trump unto us, a claim for which there is also some empirical evidence. History has repeatedly shown that a reliable way to fuel nationalistic, insular, populist politics is to ignore the downsides of disruptive economic change. If history has repeatedly shown that, why on earth didn't all these brilliant frikkin' economists figure that out BEFORE conditions got so damned bad for so many people? The article is a good start I suppose, but, the outline is soft, vague, lacking detail and uncertain. Its approach to helping workers hurt by globalization is barely developed. What are the specifics for each age group of workers? The specifics by industry and educational level and region of the country? These economists still don't know what they're talking about.
