Afaik Optane is limited to Intel (whether that is support on motherboards or manufacturers) and I would rather have us all adopt a standard where there are more suppliers and not a single company that holds the strings for everyone else.
- vbezhenar 8y agoAFAIK Optane is an ordinary SSD. There are some Intel-only technologies, like using Optane for HDD caching, but if you just need fast SSD, you should be fine.
- benchaney 8y ago> There are some Intel-only technologies, like using Optane for HDD caching That isn't intel only either[0], although IIRC their hardware implementation is intel only. [0] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dm-cache https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dm-cache
- Makepio 8y agoThere is a bit difference between Optane and ordinary NAND SSD. Optane is PCM like memory, it is a byte addressable flash. So the sellman said it maybe have longer wearout time than normal NAND SSD. They cooperate with Micron to implement this economic system . They can use optane demand to help persistent memory to thrive too.
