This post is clearly political and calls for universal health care have been around for decades.
- ape4 8y agoUniversal health care helps startups.
- macintux 8y agoAnd helps people feel empowered to try to start their own company.
- seanmcdirmid 8y agoIt would also help most big companies with spiraling health care costs, as well as lower paying jobs that can’t afford to provide benefits anyways.
- MrBuddyCasino 8y agoThis is not certain. There is evidence that the safer people feel, the less willing they are to take risks. This is only paradoxical at first glance.
- amclennon 8y agoOn the other hand, taking potential health concerns out of the equation makes working for a startup inherently less risky. Before the ACA removed restrictions of pre-existing conditions, merely switching employers carried the risk of losing access to necessary healthcare.
- mac01021 8y agoYou don't need universal or publicly funded healthcare for this. You just need it to become the norm for employers not to provide healthcare insurance. So for example (and I am NOT saying we should actually do this) if they would simply pass a law forbidding employers from including health coverage as part of their compensation packages, then everyone would be buying their own insurance (on exchanges or wherever) and startups along with every other business would be relieved of the burden.
- calcifer 8y agoIt's only political to a certain segment of Americans. For pretty much every other major country, it's just the natural, correct state of things.
- mac01021 8y agoStories about who is winning an election, or about how many votes a candidate is going to lose because of some comment she made during her campaign are not of interest. But there is a difference between politics and policy. The effects of various policies and how to construct policy to achieve a given effect are topics that will be of great interest to most hackers. Hacking society is what legislators do all day long. That's why you see stories like this one getting upvoted.
