I think it's more about preventing aging than diseases. There are a lot of people who are "monstrous death worshipers" because they want to cure cancer but not aging. They see cancer as a problem that's worth solving but old-age-death is part of being human so they just don't care about it at all. Even criticizing rich people for trying to prolong their own lives. I agree though that it completely ignores all other causes of death and the incremental improvements we're making. We'll still get hit by cars even if we don't age. I see that more as a lack of detail than an important problem with the story.
