The APL family actually has a fairly strong claim to the term given that APL was cited as a major influence in John Backus's lecture "Can Programming Be Liberated From the von Neumann Style? A Functional Style and its Algebra of Programs".
- seanmcdirmid 9y agoAPL definitely influenced functional programming, but why would they even want to claim that word when they were already happy with array programming? What would Iverson say if he were still alive?
- platinumrad 9y agoI was thinking about FP, FL, and J when I said "APL family" but I guess they've adopted the term "function-level".
