Didn't Zuck take the idea for Facebook from someone else and then run with it?

  It's a popular story, but out of all gripes you have against Zuck it's perhaps the least relevant. Especially so in HN, where the daily mantra is "the idea is worthless but the execution is". There are many valid criticisms against Zuck, and I don't think this one quite holds value as much as the others.

    It is one thing to get an idea from someone else and beat them with a superior implementation. It's a whole different thing to partner with said someone else to implement their idea, then sabotage the project from the inside while simultaneously working on your own, competing, implementation. The fact that those guys sued FB and got an extremely generous settlement tells everything you need to know about the likeliness of there being grounds for the claim. Truth be told, they won the lottery by being zucked, there's no way in Heaven or Hell they would have managed to build their own idea into such a success to get that kind of exit.

  No. The "idea" was already quite old. He scammed the scammers: he stole the company from the "idea guys" who tried to hire a naive nerd to build a company for them and hand it over.

    ConnectU wasn't even supposed to be a social network originally, but rather a dating site. You can still see the original mockups of it on archive.org, and it was honestly quite crappy.

That text was so long ago I don't think it's relevant anymore. Oprah Winfrey was also crack cocaine smoker in a cycle of abusive relationships in her late twenties. If people choose to change their perspectives they can, and everything indicates that Mark has matured quite a bit since then.

  Sure, if by matured, you mean that zuck has refined his ability to harvest and use personal data without any sort of qualms. What Facebook has become is technically brilliant, but the "dumb fuck" attitude shows no signs of having lessened.

    More importantly, those views were of the early days of the company. It's very likely that the early hires and executives also shared the same views. Unless everyone in that cohort had a change of heart or the entire executive slate was turned over, the company likely reflects the same views about the "dumb fucks"

      I think more importantly is that it was the prevalent attitude when potentially / probably core systems were being developed which are undoubtedly still in place, in some form, today, and that also very likely have carried forward those same biases. If you have little respect for your users outwardly then I'm sure it reflects itself in the code. I mean, isn't this how we've ended up with GDPR in the first place?
