In that sense, it might actually be "safer" for an individual American to use a Chinese phone. It may be backdoored, but at least the PLA isn't going to share your vacation pics with the DEA, but the NSA might.
- homero 9y agoExactly why I use Russian services like Yandex mail. Russia can read it all they want but they'll never give it to the U.S.
- sologoub 9y agoThat’s naive. When great powers have common goals, they cooperate just fine: https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/boston-bombing-anniversary/russia-warned-u-s-about-tsarnaev-spelling-issue-let-him-n60836 https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/boston-bombing-anniversary... https://www.reuters.com/article/us-russia-usa-intelligence/u-s-helped-thwart-major-attack-in-st-petersburg-u-s-russia-say-idUSKBN1EB0NK https://www.reuters.com/article/us-russia-usa-intelligence/u...
- sushid 9y agoYour profile also says > Greetings from Russia! #Bitcoin Might be another reason ( or two ;) ) as to why you choose to use Yandex mail.
- King-Aaron 9y agoI love the smell of fresh astroturf in the morning.
- dang 9y agoThat crosses into personal/national attack and is not ok here. Please don't do it again. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- sushid 9y agoIt's my first time getting flagged but how is claiming that a Russian resident (national or permanent or otherwise) preferring to use Yandex mail a national/personal attack in any way?
- dang 9y agoI interpreted it through the filter of the current discourse re trolls, bots, manipulation, meddling, and collusion. If you didn't mean to insinuate about any of that, I'm sorry for misreading you! I wasn't the only one, though (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16381477 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16381477). It's sad, but if a comment doesn't include enough information to rule out the most inflammatory interpretations, that's where readers will go.
- sushid 9y agoAh, fair enough. I didn't mean it that way but will be more mindful next time. Thanks, Daniel.
- adventured 9y agoIf you're an American and you use services outside of the US, you are in fact enabling - entirely legally - the NSA to do dramatically more aggressive things to target your information / data / email.
- ldiracdelta 9y agoBut... they were already doing it.. And no signs of stopping..
