The ROI on keeping a personal blog up at 5 9s is awful... I understand the desire from a geeky perspective, but it's only really useful for personal enjoyment of the challenge, or bragging.
- jsmthrowaway 9y agoDon't forget completely irrelevant HN comments, the only kind of bragging that matters. "S3 is down, but check out my .01RPS multihomed Wordpress which doesn't use S3 in the slightest, and the meta posts on it about how I did it!" Never fails. I should start talking more about my 100% availability on a blank white page I use for parked domains. That's right: I see your nines and raise you zeroes, baby!
- mrb 9y ago«.01RPS» Off by 6 orders of magnitude: actually 10,000 rps sustained for a few hours (2,500 page hit/sec × 4 req per page). These are my—admitedly very rare—peaks when the blog gets slashdotted.
- jsmthrowaway 9y agoSigh. The idea is that it's not really relevant. Why do you think following up to correct something not even pointed at you (the hint being Wordpress, I did look and know you're not using it) makes your commentary any more relevant to this thread? This isn't a competition (you'd lose) and an outage of something you don't use isn't really an opportunity to show your stuff off. I get it, you're proud of it; you're also talking to people who scale tens of thousands of RPS or more, and I'm talking writes, not cached reads. This entire thread, my responses included, pretty much adds nothing to the discussion and I'm sad we are having it at all.
- johnfn 9y ago> This isn't a competition (you'd lose) This is particularly bad discourse imo.
- scott_karana 9y agoS3 is only three nines, and EC2 is 99.95%. That's almost certainly lower than combining reputable VPS providers geo-redundantly, and likely a much higher cost for the "convenience". And it's not just for geeky pride. You learn the most when things break. Far too many funded startups run poorly architected apps in a single AWS EZ, unlike GP. https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/sla/ https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/sla/ https://aws.amazon.com/s3/sla/ https://aws.amazon.com/s3/sla/
- killbrad 9y agoWhat is EZ and GP?
- scott_karana 9y agoI meant to type "AZ", availability zone. GP is "grandparent", the poster who started the line of discussion. (mrb)
