Therw actually are people that do program in such a 2D diagram type, it's called LabVIEW. I recently had to work with it and while it was a pain to drag around these blocks instead of just using my keyboard, it really did give you a better idea of the data flow and made it incredibly easy to execute things in parallel. Just place two blocks on top of each other.
