I really wish developers stop using the JS editors and switch to platform specific editors. It's 2017 and all platforms have great native text editors, like Notepad++, GEdit, and if you need cross-platform, Sublime text.
I don't see the point I using these electron based editors which waste tons of CPU cycles, and provide nothing of value.
- tracker1 9y agoFrankly, VS Code is WAY better in terms of plugin and configuration than any of the editors you mention.. from git integration, search, integrated terminal, integrated debugging with ui driven break points, etc, not even counting plugins. None of the editors you mention support those features. It's not wasting CPU cycles, and frankly even if it is, it's better than wasting my cycles having to switch between several terminal windows, apps, and file system browsers all because you don't think I shouldn't use an electron app.
- kuschku 9y agoThen try out the JetBrains IDEs, and report back. All the features, none of the slowdown. I can't believe a Java IDE is actually faster than the new default editors.
- IshKebab 9y agoThe JetBrains IDEs are far slower then VSCode. Granted they do more, but they're still slow. And this is on a top-of-the-line MBP.
- kuschku 9y agoI’ve ran the JetBrains IDEs on my thinkpad and desktop, and they’re consistently faster than VSCode when you compare them 1:1 (as in, you have a language plugin for that language + refactoring + co in VSCode).
- charrondev 9y agoI do most of my work in PHP, JavaScript, and sass. VSCode is far faster and much more responsive than PHPStorm or WebStorm on my 2014 MacBook. It's missing refactoring support for PHP so I can't use it for everything, but for my day to day it's the best editor I've ever used by a mile.
- tracker1 9y agoIn my experience, they aren't faster... used to use WebStorm before switching to VS Code... VS Code works better, at least in my experience. NOTE: if you're running on a hard drive based machine, then the Jetbrains IDEs may run better.
- kowdermeister 9y agoCode is the best FREE editor that comes with advanced Node debugging out of the box. For TypeScript projects it's also great. Not to mention the shitloa*s of plugins that comes with its ecosystem.
- morganvachon 9y agoExcellent point, and now that WSL exists, vim/nano/emacs are available on every modern platform one would wish to use for development.
- roryisok 9y ago> I really wish developers stop using the JS editors and switch to platform specific editors Why? How does what I use affect you?
