Can we not do this? This is not reddit.
- atonse 9y agoIt's harmless fun once in a while :) Companies like Juicero and Theranos really kind of ask for it.
- BoiledCabbage 9y ago> It's harmless fun once in a while No it's extremely low effort, low quality content. Conveys nothing of value, distracts from interesting discussion, and is a habit that once adopted absolutely won't happen just "once in a while". Evidence? See reddit. There are a million places online for low quality content, let's keep HN as one of the few exceptions.
- Karunamon 9y agoThe insistence that HN be a completely dour, humorless place reduces its quality a lot more than a single subthread ever could.
- minimaxir 9y agoThere's a bit of nuance to humor; it's not black and white. Good humor is much, much harder to produce than code. Pun threads in particular are lazy attempts at humor, which is worse.
- Karunamon 9y agoI disagree and find puns amusing. Certainly not noxious enough to encounter the outright hatred expressed here.
- mrkrabo 9y agoIt doesn't have to be humourless. You're free to make jokes. You're not free to make a comment that just consists of a joke.

- tdb7893 9y agoI read HN for technical content so humor is fine as long as it doesn't distract from the content much. It's like a work meeting, humor is good but not of it distracts from what the actual point is

- atonse 9y agoThanks, I went back and made it a point to upvote every single pun comment I saw. I hope I never take myself so seriously as to get all wound up over a harmless set of _internet comments_. I absolutely love HN but a shrine of immaculate content, it definitely is not.
- danso 9y agoI doubt folks are too "wound up" over it. It's more an understanding that HN is as successful as it is because the community actively discourages low-effort content. It's unfortunate that some people think that quality discussion communities just happen, as if Internet message boards were the one place in the universe that defied the forces of entropy.
- jMyles 9y agoThere are plenty of habits I prefer not cross over from reddit to HN, but pun threads aren't one of them. They're harmless fun, no?
- bpodgursky 9y agoNo, it distracts from any actual informative comments when pun drivel gets upvoted to the top.
- cwyers 9y agoIt's less distracting than having 20 comments at the bottom of the thread to something that's been flagkilled and having to read the replies and trying to guess what got flagkilled, though.
- swsieber 9y agoYou can use the show dead feature... if you really want to know what got killed. And there's something to be said for the occasional inconvenience of flag killed comments for keeping a site from degenerating.
- gardnr 9y agoHow does one use the show dead feature?
- sp332 9y agoHead to https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=gardnr https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=gardnr and set "showdead" to "yes", then click update.
- err4nt 9y agoThank you so much for this - I've always wondered what that meant, and knowing now I can read all of the normal HN comments _and_ the jokes has made my HN experience 2x better!
