If only VLC had been re-written in rust this would never have happened. For shame.
- remotehack 9y agoJava would work much better for VLC.
- easuter 9y agoNo. Java doesn't have fearless concurrency, zero-cost abstractions or move semantics.
- thaumasiotes 9y ago"Fearless concurrency" and "zero-cost abstractions" sound a lot like meaningless marketing terms.
- easuter 9y agoOnly to someone who hasn't experienced the earth-shattering enlightenment rust provides.
- rdiddly 9y agoDunno about "fearless concurrency," but "zero-cost abstractions" and "move semantics" are straight off the front page of rust-lang.org. So they're kind of marketing-ish in trying to make you go "hmm sounds intriguing" and click to find out more.
- jarman 9y ago"fearless concurrency" is meaningless marketing, "zero-cost abstractions" is valid term
- lawl 9y agoOh look, it's the Rust Evangelism Strike Force at work again.
- dang 9y agoPlease don't react to provocation by making the thread worse (a.k.a. please don't feed the trolls).
- lawl 9y agoHow are you so sure it's trolling? Someone from the Rust Team has defended such behavior as good marketing [0]. [0] https://lobste.rs/s/wq6eov/changes_i_would_make_go#c_ofxtj1 https://lobste.rs/s/wq6eov/changes_i_would_make_go#c_ofxtj1
- dang 9y agoOne is never 100% sure, but note that the first part ("Please don't react to provocation by making the thread worse") holds regardless.
- nradov 9y agoFeel free to rewrite VLC in Rust. No one is stopping you.
- usefulcat 9y agoPretty sure that was sarcasm.
- easuter 9y agoNo. That would require becoming familiar with a massive codebase that has accrued contributions from thousands of developers over the years. It is far more effective to sit on my high horse and instruct unenlightened plebs on the one true path to memory-safety.
- O5vYtytb 9y agoYes but it would also not have nearly as many features as it does right now.
- dang 9y agoWe ban accounts for trolling, so please don't do that here. Also, you've posted many uncivil and/or unsubstantive comments. We ban accounts for that too, so please don't do that either.
- easuter 9y agoThanks for the heads-up. I'll remember to use a throwaway next time.
- jackhack 9y agoNo, that's not the point and now you're antagonizing the moderating team. You were asked, and warned, "Do not do that" so, don't do it under your usual name, or a throwaway. There is no shortage of places on the internet to cause trouble. This isn't one of them.
