Ok, so I installed it to try it out.
Trying to get the WhatsApp widget running it seems like I must allow access to the camera and the microphone on my computer.
This is ridiculous.
On mobile, this is not needed, and is maybe even fine. When the app is turned off you know it isn't listening or taking pictures.
On a desktop computer there is no such guarantee. On the other hand this applies to all software I'm running. Maybe it's time to put a piece of tape over the camera.
- devopsproject 9y agodoes your camera have an LED? It is supposed to be wired up in a way that the camera cannot be powered up without also turning the led on so you know it is active.
- symmetricsaurus 9y agoSometimes the LED can be turned off even if the camera is on. But that may require some extra sneakyness.
- pbhjpbhj 9y agoThere's simple flag you can set now to control most LEDs on Linux. Eg http://www.0xf8.org/2009/09/the-shortcomings-of-the-linux-leds-api/ http://www.0xf8.org/2009/09/the-shortcomings-of-the-linux-le.... FWIW didn't work for my WiFi, had to use an alternative (modprobe.conf maybe?).
