- ilugaslifg 9y agoJesus christ. They successfully bought him off with $20 worth of flimsy plastic crap and company scrip. What a miserable shame.
- scrollaway 9y agoBlizzCon all expenses paid is several grands alone. Whether they should have shelled out for more is another question, but it's certainly not "$20 worth of flimsy plastic crap".
- ajmurmann 9y agoBlizzCon tickets are practically free to Blizzard though, aren't they?
- detaro 9y agoSince tickets are "only" $199 normally anyways, the ticket is clearly not the expensive part of "going to BlizzCon all expenses paid".
- scrollaway 9y agoRight. When they fly people in (such as the press) the hotel accomodations alone ends up being worth 1.5-2k for the stay (3-4 nights, $500 ish a night at the Hilton anaheim), and I suspect he's going to be there a bit longer as they'll surely show him around the Blizzard campus in Irvine (and they did say they'll take him out for drinks etc). I would estimate they are likely spending up to 4k usd on this guy, just from what he said they're doing.
- goldenkey 9y agoThat's a joke for what that CD was worth in sheer value to the community of hackers and gamers and modders worldwide for years to come. Once he made that reddit post he sealed his fate. Should hsve just silently torrented it from a coffee shop over Tor. Silly kid.
- scrollaway 9y agoI too wish I could be spending today looking at the SC gold master source code and playing with it, but it's really arrogant to say with definite certainty what this guy "should" have done.
- corobo 9y ago> what that CD was worth in sheer value to the community of hackers and gamers and modders $0?
- goldenkey 9y agoValue isn't always pricable. This was priceless.
- dmead 9y agowhat a complete idiot. i hope he copied it and it resurfaces sometime.
- ricardobeat 9y agoYou do realize that hundreds of people have had access to that source code over the years? The disc being "found" doesn't make it less illegal.
- Sabinus 9y agoThis is horrible. :(
- stingraycharles 9y agoIt's a very twisted train of thought going on here. I had to dig a bit deeper in that thread to find them, but here is an example: https://www.reddit.com/r/gamecollecting/comments/68xzxt/starcraft_gold_master_source_code_update/dh3sds0/ https://www.reddit.com/r/gamecollecting/comments/68xzxt/star...
- Dylan16807 9y agoGo ahead and disagree with that train of thought, but I don't see how it's 'twisted' to call him selfish. You can call the venom in those posts twisted, but that is a very different thing from saying the actual reasoning behind the posts is twisted.
- jakebasile 9y agoSelfish for following the law and respecting the wishes of the authors of a work? Jesus, people are really performing some mental gymnastics to justify the hypothetical theft of property in this case in order to arrive at the conclusion that the finder is somehow being selfish.
- Dylan16807 9y agoSometimes, not most of the time but sometimes, the wishes of an author are bad for the public. In a hypothetical scenario where an author wants to destroy all traces of their work, it's a bad thing to help them. And this is about the data, and possible copyright violations, not the theft of property. Him returning the physical disk is perfectly fine. So throw out that argument. It's really very straightforward. No gymnastics.
- yomly 9y agoBrahms destroyed a whole bunch of his works out of his own insecurity that they were not good enough. Brahms is now long dead but his (that were not destroyed) works live on.
