My learning with tuning computers in several companies with a lot of money for faster turn around speeds:
1. IO is not as important as your gut feeling tells you (e.g. 5x faster IO often led to <2x faster compiles)
2. Programming languages tout the parallelism horn, but their compilers and tools are really not optimized for many cores.
- marcosdumay 9y agoFor #1, why would it be? Programs are a bunch of text files, read from beginning to end, that almost always fit in a small part of RAM. 2x faster compiles is still too big an improvement, something there is badly optimized.
