Is this why there's a black bar at the top of HN now?
- kranner 9y agoYes.
- 3131s 9y agoYeah, this is the first time in a while though that I've seen it. I personally wish HN didn't do this (not to say that Bob Taylor isn't deserving), only because I don't think it's possible to be inclusive of everyone who deserves recognition. HN did it for people like Steve Jobs, who demonstrably didn't care about tech workers or anyone else for that matter, but many others I can think of were passed over.
- codesternews 9y agoSteve Jobs has changed the tech. It does not matter what people think about other people. It is what they contributed to the world. Steve Jobs has changed the way we live. He was most innovative and forward thinking guy. He deserve more than anybody. However I agree with your other statement. But it is way to show respect.
- cholantesh 9y agoIf by innovative, you mean thieving, sure. He was notorious for passing the ideas of others off as his own, especially after rejecting them. Make no mistake, he was visionary in prioritizing UX and design thinking within this industry, but he did very little innovating of his own.

- i336_ 9y agoUnfortunately this seems to be a slightly thorny issue. I've seen a number of moderately-highly voted "____ has died" posts with no black bar, and wondered a bit. But having it for everyone would be a maintenance nightmare (timing, latency, etc), raise questions, and probably be more of a distraction than a respectful remembrance (not least because its increased presence would devalue its existence at all). So some selection needs to be done. I'm guessing one or two people have the call. The sad thing is that justification - the thing I think everyone might want here (?) - has too high a risk of being fuel for flamewars, bikeshedding and complaints. Which is inappropriate when you remember the context of what's actually just happened.
- nodesocket 9y ago> HN did it for people like Steve Jobs, who demonstrably didn't care about tech workers or anyone else for that matter I am frankly fed up with Hacker News and Reddit demonizing companies and business leaders just because they built successful companies that make money. Building a business is really hard, cut-throat, and competitive. Business is not charity. Business is not social justice. Business can and does provide good and impact way beyond what nonprofits do -- mainly providing jobs and income that makes this entire existence possible. It especially seems like hypocrisy, since lots of people here on HN have dreams and aspirations of building successful technology companies yet continue to demonize those that are successful.
- adventured 9y ago> I don't think it's possible to be inclusive of everyone who deserves recognition The goal is not to be inclusive of everyone that is subjectively regarded as being deserving of recognition. The goal is specifically to celebrate Bob Taylor. Nothing more and nothing less. It is a subjective decision - one which you have no control over - as are many aspects of HN. I applaud HN for continuing with the black bar; the lack of someone getting that bar does not devalue their contribution in any manner.
- 3131s 9y agoI am only giving feedback. I shouldn't have taken that shot at Jobs I guess, or maybe people are taking my comment as distracting from this celebration of Bob Taylor's life. Sorry about that, not my intention.
- tzs 9y agoThey should make the black bar a clickable link to the relevant HN submission, or make it so that it has alt text that names the person who has dies, or both.
