FWIW, we're working on https://github.com/nidium/Nidium https://github.com/nidium/Nidium presicely to fix this.
A new kind of browser engine, not based on any existing engine, allowing developers to use a subset of the web (webgl, 2d, layout) without being forced to use a bloated ecosystem (and which also works on mobile and low end device).

- SOLAR_FIELDS 10y ago> To build nidium you need at least 5.7GB of disk space. A build from scratch may take 30 to 90 minutes, depending of the speed of your computer. Is this abnormally large for a project like this?
- pavlov 10y agoBuilding Chromium/CEF requires several times more disk space and takes several hours on my new MacBook Pro. So I guess the answer is "not abnormally large".
- paraboul 10y agoWell, it has a lot of dependencies to build : - mozilla spidermonkey - Google Skia - ffmpeg - portaudio - leveldb - OpenSSL And various other stuff.
- cookiecaper 10y agoJust for comparison: I can build WINE from scratch in 6 minutes on my laptop (10 years ago, it took 20 minutes).
- Etheryte 10y agoBoth your webpage and your docs are riddled with typos and the like. While it isn't indicative of code or project quality, it sure makes taking the project seriously a lot harder.
- paraboul 10y agoHey, We're French and it's indeed hard for us to get this perfectly right and focusing on the project itself at the same time. We're planning to move this to github in order to let the community help us on this.
- JustSomeNobody 10y agoJust because I'm curious, why would you not use your native language for the content on your page?
- blueprint 10y agoSeems an easy question. English is basically a/the global language. If you want a massive portion of the community to find the content inaccessible, making it available only in French is a good way to do so.
- paraboul 10y agonidium is an open source tech project not a local product.
- poirier 10y agoStarred because your answers here are beautiful.
- collyw 10y agoBecause English is the most spoken language in the world perhaps? Its even more noticeable in tech, because a lot of docs only seem to be in English.
- jwilk 10y agoI'm pretty sure the most spoken language is Chinese.
- ajmurmann 10y agoI can't find on the page if Nidium supports WebRTC. Are you currently supporting it or are planning too?
- Touche 10y agoLooks really nice! Does this implement a subset of CSS?
- jmcdiesel 10y agoSo another rendering engine to deal with inconsistencies?
- paraboul 10y agoIt's not meant to support the Web. It's meant to bring app development to web developers. nidium will never be able to render regular web page.
- cjcole 10y agoIs there an opportunity for Servo here?

- dangoor 10y agoIt may be less an issue for games, but I'd have to wonder about stuff like accessibility. While I agree that the web platform has many things that can likely be removed in a pure app platform, I have to think that there are also many pieces built up over the years that are important and would have to be rebuilt.
- isaiahg 10y agoI've applaud the effort but I don't think I would use this over electron. Without HTML/css how do you make an interface? With canvas directly? I can't find any examples other than three.js stuff.
- paraboul 10y agonidium has a markup language (XML based), a layout engine and will soon support Yoga https://facebook.github.io/yoga/ https://facebook.github.io/yoga/ in order to bring flexbox. Also nidium focus on mobile devices.
- DLudwig 10y agoIs Nidium being used in any real applications (or games)? Are the needs of specific applications (or games!) influencing the feature set of Nidium?
- k__ 10y agoNice. But I was hoping for something like Electron/Node.js with a different/smaller engine like Ducktape. There seems to be a Chakra version of Node.js so this should be possible in the future. The only heavy weight in this constellation remains Chromium...
