"Capcom's Street Fighter V update installed a driver that can be used as a backdoor by any application installed on a Windows computer." (via https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/proprietary-back-doors.html https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/proprietary-back-doors.html)
- khedoros1 10y agoI think their point is that you can say the same about closed hardware. And since you're already putting a black-box hardware component into the system (with its own black-box firmware, as well), how much more harmful is it to have a closed driver?
- dandelion_lover 10y agoSecurity is not a boolean: secure/insecure. It is the price to own you. It is higher with free drivers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_in_depth_%28computing%29 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defense_in_depth_%28computing%...
- amelius 10y agoSecurity is why drivers should run inside a sandbox, even if they are open-source.
- dandelion_lover 10y agoI totally agree. But open-source drivers running in a sandbox are even more secure than proprietary ones in a sandbox, which is the essence of the defense in depth.
- dandelion_lover 10y ago>with its own black-box firmware, as well Of course, the firmware should be open, too.
