That is true, BUT: In the 1980s A) far fewer mobile devices were around and B) such devices ran happily on Mignon batteries (think the Walkman). There is a vastly bigger hunger now for batteries (also as storage devices/electric cars) and I bet inventions/innovations will be faster implemented.
