This isn't ever going to stop until the ignorant stop believing in magical potions to "cure" ailments.
- amelius 10y agoPerhaps somebody should initiate a randomized clinical trial to find out the obvious, publish the results, and then it will stop.
- overcast 10y agoI don't think you understand the mentality of people who believe in these practices. That's like providing a mountain of scientific evidence against religions, to a devout follower.
- nsxwolf 10y agoI think parent was sarcastic.
- asdfologist 10y agoHow well has that worked for climate science?
- XaspR8d 10y agoWell, we just haven't found a good control planet yet.
- mikestew 10y agoWe just had a person on this very page argue that homeopathy shouldn't be equated with junk science. You think double-blind studies are going to make a lick of difference to poachers, or their customers?
- thatfrenchguy 10y agoJust go to Whole Foods and you'll see this aren't going to stop soon.
- egeozcan 10y agoI've never been to a Whole Foods store so perhaps the joke is lost on me but isn't the whole point of eating whole foods, escaping the potential yet unknown "magic" combinations that occur with food processing?
- ojiikun 10y agohere at the downtown WF in Seattle, virtually every check out aisle has at least a few vials of homeopathic garbage. they also go quite hard in the pseudo science marketing against GMOs, gluten, and coconut / palm ingredients. apart from selling unreasonably priced produce of no particular merit, they are just another grocery store selling a particular brand of chemical puritanism and superstition.
- polpo 10y agoAbout 1/4 of the floor space of a typical Whole Foods is taken up by homeopathy and other quack remedies.
- antidaily 10y ago1/8
- ChristianBundy 10y agoI've only ever been to the ones in Portland, Oregon, but I haven't seen any of the quack remedies outside of the homeopathy and nutrition aisle (the same way that Fred Meyer does it). I'd be more inclined to call it 5% of the floor space at most, but maybe there are differences between stores.
- usaphp 10y agoNot really. Every Whole Foods I shopped at only had a small homeopathy section along with shampoos and beauty products, most of the stuff they sell is regular food just organic.
- xkcd-sucks 10y agothe placebo effect will never disappear
- partycoder 10y agoOr clear cutting forests to print trade joe's marketing material that ends directly in the garbage can.
- overcast 10y agoWood is a renewable resource, and most paper comes from tree farms, just like housing timber. Which is why the wood is so soft these days, compared to the old trees they used to clear cut. "According to the USDA Forest Service, four million trees are planted every day in the United States. Of this amount, the wood and paper products industry plants on average 1.7 million trees daily,1 excluding millions of additional seedlings regenerated naturally. In Canada, natural regeneration is supplemented by the planting of 600 million seedlings per year." "According to The State of America’s Forests, a report released by the Society of American Foresters, replanting and reforestation efforts have helped keep forestland stable. There are nearly 750 million acres of forests in the U.S. — about the same as 100 years ago. Annual net growth of U.S. forests is 36 percent higher than the volume of annual tree removals. Total forest cover in the U.S. and Canada basically remained the same from 1990 to 2005.3 Furthermore, less than one half of one percent of Canada’s forestland is harvested annually.4 Sustainable forests are also carefully managed to help prevent catastrophic damage from fires, disease and insects."
- partycoder 10y agoTrees themselves may be renewable but soil composition/nutrients/hydration doesn't regenerate as quickly.
- microcolonel 10y agoClear cutting is not a common way to harvest pulpwood, especially in North America.
- cmurf 10y agoIgnorant people don't stop believing in nonsense. They have to be simultaneously educated, and there must be protections so that it's safe to criticize nonsense.
