I'm still trying to understand why they don't just auction tickets.
- itchyouch 10y agoBecause it is about being equitable to middle and lower-income fans. Otherwise, only the richest fans would outbid everyone else and the artists don't want to alienate a large majority of their fan base by making their shows unavailable to only but the folks with the means.
- matwood 10y ago> Because it is about being equitable to middle and lower-income fans. It's about the perception of being equitable. As a comment mentions above, many artists/venues work directly with scalpers.
- conjectures 10y agoSo start a mailing list when you're a small band. Email your oldest fans a promo code with priority booking and/or first tranche auction option. Give people with an academic email address early options. Give people who like you on social media early options. Include a promo code in sales of online merchandise for future gigs. There are lots of potential ways to do it, while undermining the scalpers. Also gigs seem pretty unaffordable already.

- number6 10y agoHow would this work? Would you have to enter a number an wait till let's say 24 hours before the gig? Could work and could minimize the problem. The buyer wouldn't know til x hours before if he hand won. But the scalpers would know: " were payed average of x for similar gigs." So they knew how much to bet and still scrape of most of the tickets. And the sell them at a high rate as last minute tickets for a sold out gig and you could be sure to get a ticket.
- rhino369 10y agoProbably because of bad PR. The relation between a band and it's fan is very personal. The fans would feel betrayed if the band was auctioning tickets. I've heard of some venues using a hometeam scalping operation to get around this. They sell the tickets knowing that their scalpers will bot them. Then the venue gets a cut of the proceeds. Could be an urban legend however.
- gpawl 10y agoWhat you have just described is literally Ticketmaster's modern business model. Ticketmaster scalps the tickets and pays a kickback to the venue and/or artist. Ticketmaster takes the heat so the the venue and artist don't have to.
