I think you're wrong there. The "old guard" conservatives actually walked the walk when it came to their free market ideals, and a big part of globalization was enabled by them.
There seems to be a new strain of conservatism being lead by Trump which seems to be a marriage of formerly liberal populism (protect workers, rebuild middle class, bring back factory jobs, socialized healthcare) and conservative economics.
- matwood 10y agoYeah, the old guard would be considered libertarian now.
- oculusthrift 10y agowhen? we saw the same big wheeling deficit creating policies in the bush years. definitely not just trump.
- woofyman 10y ago>socialized healthcare You're not paying attention. They're talking about access to insurance. Sure, I have access to a private Gulfstream jet, but that doesn't mean I can afford it.
- nerfhammer 10y agoConservatives have a uniquely American small-government ideology. Trump is essentially a European right-wing populist, something that hasn't really existed in America before.
- CalChris 10y ago> Conservatives have a uniquely American small-government ideology. No. Unless you think that defense spending is not part of the government. This is per capita spending by year: https://www.mercatus.org/sites/default/files/Chart1-Spending-Per-Capita-vero.png https://www.mercatus.org/sites/default/files/Chart1-Spending... Actually, George W Bush signed the spending bills for 2009. But the central point remains that conservatives (Republicans) hold no claim to fiscal conservatism.
- nerfhammer 10y ago> hold no claim to fiscal conservatism. You can say they act inconsistently with their claims but it's another thing to say they never even claim it. I think they do often claim this.
- CalChris 10y agoI think we're misunderstanding each other. Yes, of course conservatives claim fiscal conservatism. But when I say they hold no claim, it's an almost archaic phrase meaning yeah, they can say it but don't actually own the claim. Bluntly, according to their record, conservatives are not fiscal conservatives. They just dress that way.
- nerfhammer 10y agoSure. So, it's part of their ideology. That's what I was saying.
