Assassinating the US President is a pretty standard device plot in many action movies and TV shows. In fact, if you had to judge Americans by our movies, you'd probably think we're all obsessed with killing the President.
Also, I could be out of the loop but I don't think the Pearl Harbor attacks are matters of national security any more.
- krapp 10y agoWe also blow up the White House a lot. And we blew up New York before it was cool. We're quite comfortable with watching our country get violently deconstructed in all sorts of fiction.
- seanmcdirmid 10y agoAnyone else notice how they moved the last act of transformer's 4 to Hong Kong? Ya, Michael Bay found out he couldn't destroy Beijing or any other Chinese city, but somehow Hong Kong was ok.
- Inconel 10y agoI've never seen the movie, were the scenes prior to HK taking place in mainland China?
- seanmcdirmid 10y agoYes, in Beijing! But they didn't stay there long, and nothing really happened there. It was such a weird plot element that it stood out like a huge sore thumb.
- Inconel 10y agoInteresting. Thanks for answering all of my questions in this thread. To be honest, I'm somewhat surprised there were any untouched cities left for Michael Bay to destroy after already having made three previous Transformers films.
- seanmcdirmid 10y agoHe basically destroyed Chicago 2 times in the first 3 films. He has a huge hatred of Chicago, I guess.
- grzm 10y agoMore likely it's tax incentives. For example: Betsy Steinberg, managing director of the Illinois Film Office, acknowledges the cold financial calculations that go into site selection and the increasingly cutthroat competition: "Without a competitive tax credit, we'd be seeing very little business." ... Paramount Pictures' "Transformers 3," which likely will spend at least $20 million during its six-week shoot here this summer, could qualify for a tax credit of at least $6 million, which it can use or sell, effectively cutting its local filming budget. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2010-07-27/business/ct-biz-0728-film-costs--20100727_1_tax-credit-film-finance-betsy-steinberg http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2010-07-27/business/ct-bi...
- xkcd-sucks 10y agoMaybe the transformers don't have the right license plates to drive in Beijing every day of the week
- seanmcdirmid 10y agoHa! Sorry Optimus, you'll need to take the subway today.
- joncrocks 10y agoAttempting assassination yes. That is a very common plot device. By the president actually getting assassinated, i.e. it being successful? That's a bit harder to find.
- seanmcdirmid 10y agoNot that hard though.
