We'll never know the value of 3 overpasses being made more earthquake resistant or the other safety improvements (typical NYTimes that they don't even research the issue). I hate these articles because they're so weak in journalism.

- revelation 10y agoI'm pretty sure the dubious value of these improvements is dwarfed by the rise in vehicular violence that comes automatically with the extra traffic and miles driven as demand inevitably grows to fill the extra capacity. This is of course a perfectly well understood phenomenon. They went ahead anyway.
