I used this at work; while waiting for builds to complete I would use Anki [0] to learn all the names and locations of the countries. It worked pretty well, but it isn't a silver bullet. I retained maybe 50% of the information.

- oh_sigh 10y agoWhat deck(s) do you use? I've been looking for a deck that ideally has one side where there is an image of the country, and I give it the name, and another where there is the name of the country and I click on it in an image, but it's hard to find such a deck.
- iampims 10y agoTinyCards from DuoLingo has that feature.
- pbhjpbhj 10y ago.. and is an iOS only SRS card app. https://tinycards.duolingo.com/ https://tinycards.duolingo.com/
- Larrikin 10y agoSome people swear that the process of making the deck helps significantly with their ability to retain the material. Personally I find it a waste of time and all time spent editing cards is a waste to me. It doesn't help me. Learning traditionally (taking notes, answering practice questions, etc) from books and reviewing with Anki is the most effective for me.
- summarite 10y agoYmmv but when building a deck creating mnemonics for each item was really important for me. Made it a lot slower to enter data but much more fun and much more effective in later use.
- Larrikin 10y agoI found mnemonics to really only be useful when you're in the beginner stage. Once I got up to intermediate real world usage was much more helpful and easier to remember since I didn't have to remember a completely unrelated thing along with what I wanted to learn.
- hacker_9 10y agoThe highest rated geography decks was what I used [0]. But yeah finding good quality decks is the hard part, though the geography ones generally do have pictures of the country and you guess the name. - summarite 10y agoAnki has various shared decks to download that have things like name, place on map, flag, etc
- xamuel 10y ago>I retained You're doing it wrong. You're supposed to continue using the deck, indefinitely or until you're okay with losing it all. When a deck's life is measured in years, most cards' appearance frequency also become measured in years.
- summarite 10y agoI found it really motivating to see the message that a card will appear again in 4 or 7 years! But i never got beyond a year of actually using a deck...
- xamuel 10y agoHelps if you have a daily commute on public transportation (like in NYC or London or something). Perfect way to make that time productive :)
