I've seen a lot of news online about how great these Zen CPUs are going to be, matching Intel's i7-5960X. But I don't get the excitement, it seems like AMD is two+ years behind Intel [1].

Sure, it's half the price. But what if the 5960X is twice the price because Zen isn't released yet? Intel don't have much of an incentive to lower the price until Zen launches, and with their economies of scale it's likely they could price match (or lower) and still rake in $$.
