There is a moment in time when a technology is at a stage where individual amateurs or small teams can be on the cutting edge. For my Dad's generation that was homemade radios, for my generation homebrew PCs. Recently it seems like Drones and 3D printing have been at that stage where enthusiastic hobbyists pushed the technology forward. Maybe in twenty years people in this forum will be trying to think of a way to get their children excited about hacking drones or building phone apps.
