- toolz 10y agoBit of a fallacy there don't you think? I imagine it touches on a great deal of topics that can be googled for more accurate information, right? I just glanced over it and noticed the attention to detail, so while given the source it's probably not a great idea to follow the conclusions it draws blindly, it's likely still a great resource for keywords, no?
- pjc50 10y agoThat's like saying that the virus-laden phishing PDF you just recieved might contain useful information. You shouldn't go anywhere near it. If there's real substance to the allegations, there will be another copy somewhere more respectable.
- toolz 10y agoAre you suggesting a reddit post could irreversibly damage someone if they read it? That's a bit extreme is it not? I was able to glance through and glean plenty of keywords that lead to me being able to search for reputable sources that before hand I wouldn't have known what to search for. Now I'm just hoping I didn't contract a virus somehow xD
- edmccard 10y ago>it touches on a great deal of topics ... it's likely still a great resource for keywords, no? What? No. When a source is that biased, then the "list of topics covered" (and the keywords associated with them) do not somehow magically escape that bias; it is not a "great resource" for anything except the viewpoints of r/MensRights
- nailer 10y agoI'm sure there's a few neckbeardy misogynist men on /r/mensrights. I'm sure there's a few man-hating separatist lesbians on /r/feminism. But I'm also pretty sure that painting these broad brush strokes of men who want to see their kids or women who don't want to be harassed at work unnecessarily tarnishes a bunch of people trying to make things better.
- tptacek 10y agoNo, I'm pretty comfortable painting MRA's with one brush and "feminists" with another. The idea that MRA's and feminists are two ends of a single spectrum is one of those cognitive line-fitting traps we nerds fall into. The world isn't linear like that. I mean this sincerely: if you feel like there is a war on men, or that as a man in tech you're persecuted, you should find a professional to talk to. I'm not qualified to diagnose you and if I was I wouldn't do it over the Internet, but my suspicion is that a lot of MensRights activists are really experiencing pathological anxiety --- an extremely common ailment --- and that it's just expressing itself as a feeling of persecution. Not nearly enough people take advantage of mental health care. It's possible that most(!) people should, in some fashion, just like we all see doctors. We live in crazymaking times.
- nailer 10y agoThere are some areas where men are disadvantaged (e.g., as already mentioned, family court, or divorce proceedings) and saying that believing that requires psychological help is quite obviously insulting. You've been here long enough to have read the HN guidelines. You mention that the world isn't linear, but you seem to want to replace it with a simpler black and white model.
- tptacek 10y agoAs I said, I do not believe that all MRAs are experiencing chronic anxiety. There at least one other bucket I think they can be sorted into, and maybe a few more smaller ones.
