From the car purchase page, it seems that they are charging an additional $13,200 (combining the addons Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self Driving capability at $7,900 and $5,300 respectively) for the full experience:

- brianwawok 10y agoSoftware switch fee. You get the same hardware, different feature flag. Crazy right?
- imtringued 10y agoHow is that different from buying software for a computer? I can install a linux distribution or buy windows. It's the same hardware, different "feature flag". Somehow that's not crazy.
- JustSomeNobody 10y agoI don't follow your analogy. I'm not sure this qualifies as a feature flag.
- brianwawok 10y agoThis is more like your computer coming with 2 hard drives.. One active with your OS, one empty. You can at any time pay $100 and start using the other drive. Otherwise it sits empty. We are talking about giving people hardware for free, then paying money to turn it on or not.

- Taylor_OD 10y agoYou can buy a kindle with ads for $50 or a kindle without for $70. I don't like the way all this is progressing.
- thesimon 10y agoAnd the "Full Self Driving capability" comes with quite strong limitations as well: >It is not possible to know exactly when each element of the functionality described above will be available, as this is highly dependent on local regulatory approval. >Please note also that using a self-driving Tesla for car sharing and ride hailing for friends and family is fine, but doing so for revenue purposes will only be permissible on the Tesla Network, details of which will be released next year. Not sure why someone would risk this money if they can activate it later on (even though for slightly more) to see how the functionality will be?
